About
Hello you.
The history of this site goes back to somewhere about 2004 on my personal website, and among my peers, when I had my first go at what would become a fledgling attempt at open-source education – sort of. The site you’re looking at, fiveless|notes, went live in March, 2007 on now-defunct Google Pages. I moved it over to WordPress in August where it was maintained until my As ended in mid-November 2007.
Anyone who is familiar with Douglas Adams’ work would find not find the concept of “share and enjoy” one that is too distant. That was my motivation for being, in the words of many people, the RJ guy with nothing better to do than to make and upload his notes. Call it utility maximization or whatever you like, it just seemed like the most sensible thing to do, since I already had most of them typed out.
It was overwhelming to see all the hits come in with wild abandon (pardon the poetic license), but at the same time very heartening to see the popularity of the site during those few short months. So to everyone that came, and everyone who linked or spread the word around, you guys are (were?) awesome. Thank you. Also, thanks go out to my friends who contributed notes to this site, and all random people who would point out any mistakes, or suggest additions, or just leave an encouraging comment on the site – I really wouldn’t have believed in this so much without the support.
This was my experiment, as I said, in open-source education – watch this presentation by Richard Baraniuk and you’ll get what I mean. All the works – at least, those by me – are licensed under a Creative Commons remix license, which basically mean you can take any of my notes and do anything you want to them (please do improve on them) and redistribute them with only one condition attached – that your derivative works are to be distributed under the same Creative Commons license – and, of course, link back to this site.
The future is open-source, and you’re free to experiment and continue whatever legacy you feel like I’m leaving here. I will probably not be checking back here that often, or updating the site much anymore since I’m moving on to (hopefully) better things. But if you’re interested in contacting me, or think that the idea that started this site has places to go, don’t hesistate.
